Biotin (10 mg/day) given in addition to isotretinoin treatment decreased telogen and increased anagen hair rates and helped to maintain skin. Mayo Clinic does not endorse any of the third party products and services advertised. In this study of 60 patients, all were treated with isotretinoin 0. In the fourth month of treatment, there was a significant increase in anagen hair ratio and decrease in telogen hair ratio. Additionally, there was a significant decrease in skin hydration among those not treated with biotin with no significant change in those taking biotin. I read this article by Aksac et al with quite a bit of interest as I am an enthusiastic user of isotretinoin, and a significant part of my practice deals with hair loss.
How nice if an inexpensive and fairly harmless vitamin like biotin could help the skin and hair downsides of isotretinoin. The authors conducted a 4-month study with low-dose isotretinoin in 60 patients, with one half of the subjects also being given 10 mg per day of biotin.
Parameters evaluated included sebum production, skin hydration, TEWL, skin retraction, telogen counts, anagen counts, and terminal hair density. The only statistically significant findings were slightly lower skin hydration, higher telogen counts, and lower anagen counts in the group not taking biotin. Unfortunately, in spite of a very lengthy discussion section, I was left with the conclusion that, although supplementing biotin in our isotretinoin patients will not cause any harm, most will probably not see much benefit either.
Impairment of biotin metabolism with the use of isotretinoin and the mucocutaneous side effects observed in patients using isotretinoin suggests that they are a result of decreased enzyme activity. We aimed to determine the pattern of skin and hair changes in patients with acne receiving isotretinoin and how these changes were affected by biotin added to the treatment.
Sixty patients were divided into two groups. Each group contained 30 patients. Groups A and B received 0. Skin sebum and the skin retraction values decreased in both groups. Property Value Status.
